30th anniversary of the fall of the wall - anniversary bike tours along the wall

10 Nov 2019 from Heinz

It is now exactly 30 years since the borders of the GDR opened and Berlin was reunited. A historic moment that is being celebrated this week with a variety of events and art installations to mark the 30th anniversary.

How was it on 09.11.1989 at the border crossing

30 years ago, I was, as young West Berliner, at the Invalidenstrasse border crossing. It was an incredible moment. People were streaming from East to West, first a few, then more and more came. Unbelievable scenes took place that night. Strange people were hugging each other and crying with joy. I saw a woman crossing the border with her two children in her hands and her cat in her arms. Just out of East Berlin. One did not know yet how it goes on and whether the borders really remain open. Then I made my way to the eastern part, the first time ever, without border control and without ID. After a short trip and a slightly queasy feeling in my stomach, I went back to the border crossing to greet people and celebrate with them. An incredible night.

3 bike tours along the Berlin Wall with URBAN BIKE TOURS

For this anniversary year we have come up with 3 different bike tours along the Berlin Wall. A big bike tour along the Wall Bike Trail will follow next summer. We will take you on a journey through the last 60 years of Berlin. We will show you how the city changed after the fall of the wall and show you how people live today in Berlin Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain.

Berlin celebrates!

The city celebrates this anniversary with the festival week for the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall from November 4 to 10, 2019. Especially recommended are the light installations at Alexander Platz and very interesting are also the history boards at the Gethsemanekirche. We look forward with you to lots of other events in this anniversary year.
