First our tour leads us to the neighborhood of Hackescher Markt: the Scheunenviertel. It had once formed the center of Jewish life in Berlin. The remaining part of Germany’s largest synagogue shines even brighter today: The New Synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse.
Nowadays, the Scheunenviertel is popular for its numerous small cafés such as Barcomi’s. Barcomi’s opened its doors 20 years ago and offers culinary treats next to its own coffee roasting and pastry shop. From Oranienburger Straße we drive past the Friedrichstadt-Palast: the most famous revue theater, to the Tränenpalast, the former exit hall of the border crossing point of train station Friedrichstraße.
A real Berlin Currywurst at the Brandenburg Gate
Riding along the Spree river, the bike tour continues to the government district including the Reichstag, the Federal Chancellery and the Bundestag. From there we reach the most visited landmark in Berlin: the Brandenburg Gate. It is the only surviving of formerly 18 city gates. Back in the days a symbol of division, it then became a symbol of German reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Close to the Brandenburger Gate – “between tree 6 and 7” to be precise – you can eat your very first real Berlin Currywurst at the kiosk with its matching name “sausage”. From here we move alongside the former death strip and drive past the impressive Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe: The Holocaust Memorial. Passing Potsdamer Platz, we arrive at the most famous border crossing of the Cold War: Checkpoint Charlie. Center Berlin Mitte with its numerous historic sites offers us the possibility to revive Berlin’s rich history together on one single bike tour!
Prussian heritage in the city center
From Checkpoint Charlie we drive to one of the most beautiful squares in the city: the Gendarmenmarkt with its concert hall as well as the German and French dome. Afterwards we reach the “Friedrichsforum”, named after the Prussian king, Frederick II, consisting of the main building of the Humboldt University, the law faculty, the St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, the Berlin Opera and the Bebelplatz, on which in the May 1933 the book burning took place. Along the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden, the bike tour between the arsenal and the Neue Wache leads to the Museum Island, one of the most important museum complexes in the world. In addition to five museums, there is the Berlin Cathedral with Lustgarten and the newly built Berlin Castle.
Afterwards we drive into the “birthplace” of Berlin, the Nikolaiviertel, where Berlin’s first church ever was built: the Nikolaikirche.
In the center of former East Berlin: Alexanderplatz & TV Tower
In the final part of our tour, we enter the center of former East Berlin: the lively Alexanderplatz.During the entire tour we already got a glimpse, now we stand right in front of of the tallest building in the city: Berlin TV Tower. It has served the broadcasting of radio and television programs since GDR times and became a famous symbol of the GDR.
The bar “203” in the TV tower is located – as the name implies – on 203 meters from a total height of 368 meters. From there, you can enjoy a 360 ° view as well as cocktail creations and snacks.
